Denmark and Germany have just entered into an agreement about a bridge connecting the two countries across Femernsund.
The price of the 19 km long fixed connection will be EUR 4.6 billion and through government guaranteed loan, Denmark will be the owner of the bridge.
”This is a historical agreement between two nations which have been at war with each other, but today have a very close and tight economic cooperation,” says the spokesman on traffic for the Social Democratic Party, Magnus Heunicke, to borsen.dk.
”This is a giant lift to the entire Northern European region,” Heunicke continues.
The Germans are to pay approximately EUR 1.25 billion for constructions projects on the German side, while the Danish government is to gurantee loan which is necessary for building the bridge. The users of the bridge will be charged for crossing it as they are with The Great Belt Bridge.
The bridge will be ready in 2018.
The sketches on the drawing board show a bridge in full length between Rødby-Puttgarten including a railway.
The EU has warmly supported the project and will subsidy with 20% of the price.
