Congestion on the roads? - not in Copenhagen

Passability on Copenhagen's roads is top class compared with 14 other European capitals.
Copenhagen is one of the European capitals in which drivers are proceeding the fastest and are least bothered by congestion problems, writes Berlingske Tidende.

In a new report on the capital's traffic situation, the Ministry of Transport has compared traffic passability in Copenhagen with 14 other European capitals. And the Danish capital scores top grades with an average speed of 50 km per hour.
Drivers in Stockholm, Berlin and Madrid are just able to sneak up to 36 km per hour on average. And in Paris, Vienna, London, Lisbon and Rome it is much worse, while the Hungarian capital Budapest crowns them all in terms of congestion. Here the average speed is approximately 20 km per hour.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the positive picture is the result of the fact that Copenhagen has a well-functioning infrastructure. Of the capitals surveyed, Copenhagen also has the highest number of persons per vehicle as well as most bicycles and pedestrians. All the same, the survey does not mean that Copenhagen's Mayor of Construction and Environment, Klaus Bondam, will cancel the key issue of road fees to reduce congestion.

"I have also had international guests who are laughing a bit when they hear about our congestion problems. But having said that, it is in the environmental and climate sectors that Copenhagen and Denmark really have great potential to step forward and show that it is possible to create an attractive growth city environment. Road fees aimed at easing congestion are not meant to chase all drivers out of the city. They are intended to make us consider whether or not all vehicle drives are necessary," says Klaus Bondam.
