The volume of air cargo through Copenhagen Airport in Kastrup has experienced strong growth. Last year 380,000 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport – with 7 per cent growth compared to the year before.
“We have now consolidated our position as the largest air cargo hub in Scandinavia,” concludes chief of cargo Lars Korup, Copenhagen Airports.
A total of 380,000 tonnes of air cargo was handled at Copenhagen, an increase from 355,000 tonnes in 2005, writes the business portal I dag.dk.
The increase in cargo volumes was primarily driven by growing imports from Asia to Europe. Both Singapore Airlines and Korean Air Cargo have recorded growth in their all-cargo services from Singapore and Seoul to Copenhagen in recent years.
Within the last six months two new cargo routes were opened to Copenhagen. One was initiated in 2006 when Air China Cargo launched its route Shanghai-Beijing-Copenhagen-Beijing with three weekly services.
In January 2007 China Cargo Airlines began operating on the route Shanghai-Copenhagen-Paris-Shanghai, also with three weekly frequencies.
Another result of Copenhagen Airport’s success in the air cargo market is that one of the world’s largest air cargo handlers, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), opened its new Scandinavian headquarters in Copenhagen last year.
The flights have direct access from the airport to the 6,200 square metre air terminal. The WFS terminal has an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of cargo.
