The Øresund Region is Scandinavia’s largest logistic centre and one of the 7 largest in Northern Europe. With a turnover at EUR 18 billion and 77,000 employees the Øresund Region compares to Paris, London, Rotterdam and Hamburg. These are the findings in a new report, including the period 1998-2004, which is elaborated by the University of Roskilde for the network organisation Øresund Logistics, writes Øresundsbroen in its newsletter.
Totally, the Øresund Region has a strong position in Northern Europe if one looks at the freight traffic to an from different regions. Competition is keen and other regions are leading in other transport areas: Frankfurt (air freight), Rotterdam (sea transport), Paris (road transport) and Hamburg (railway transport).
In Scandinavia the Øresund Region is in competition with especially Västra Götaland (Gothenburg –region), which is strong within sea transport (Gothenburg port) and has a higher rate of employment than Skåne. However employment has gone up in Skåne in the period 1998-2004 while it has remained unchanged in Västra Götaland. It is also interesting that the service part and the logistics industry grew faster in Skåne than in Västra Götaland.
The logistics industry in the Øresund Region has also gone through a significant restructuring. Just as any other industry it is moving away from material to service oriented logistics which has grown 29 per cent. The service part is largest in Skåne (30 per cent) but increases fastest on Sjælland (25 per cent).
Forwarding of goods and other transports are by far the most important industry within service. It is followed by goods and warehouse service and support services for air, road and sea transport.
