Toyota Motor Europe

Toyota chose Copenhagen Malmö Port for its Northern European distribution activities

In 1999 Toyota, the world leading car manufacturer, wished to optimize its distribution of cars in Europe. At that time Toyota had import locations in a number of European countries with each country having the responsibility for import and local distribution of cars.

The solution implied a radically changed logistical solution with only two European transportation hubs – one in Zeebrügge in Belgium covering West- and Central Europe and one in Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) covering Northern Europe.

In 2003 the Nordic Hub Malmö opened. This terminal is to cover the import to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Western Russian market. The former four warehouses in the Nordic countries were thereby concentrated in one central hub in CMP. This solution involved CMP to establish a 220,000 square meter car terminal equipped with the most modern intermodal facilities and a central Pre Delivery Inspection facility (PDI).

Toyota has entered into a 25 year long-term rental agreement with CMP concerning the actual car terminal and PDI facilities. For Toyota it was very important to reach a rational solution reducing the overall costs while optimizing the logistics activities.
