Suggestion for new underground express line through Copenhagen City

An express line between Østerbro and the Copenhagen Central Station may solve the bottleneck problems on the S-line and improve the passenger foundation for the metro.

The 300,000 daily passengers on the Copenhagen S-line may look forward to a considerably shorter travelling time, more trains on time and better possibilities for changing lines to the metro if a new underground express line for S-trains will be built between Outer Østerbro and Copenhagen Central station, writes Berlingske Tidende.

The aim of the tunnel is to ensure sufficient capacity in the important city line system says a new suggestion for the future S-line, which the traffic researchers Alex Landex and Otto Anker Nielsen from DTU have prepared as among other things an inspiration for the Danish government’s infrastructure commission.

The double-tracked express line at roughly estimated EUR 1 billion is to be led under Nørrebro and Vesterbro, relieving the pressure of the existing bottleneck route Svanemøllen-Nørreport-Copenhagen H. The new, planned stations are to be Vibenhus Runddel, Rigshospitalet and Forum.

With a new express line the Copenhagen S-line will be able to service 50-100 per cent more passengers when the metro city line will be launched in 2018. From the outset, the latest calculations show that the S-line alone will have 135,000 new passengers daily when the ringline metro will be launched.
