Roads
Road transport plays a great role in the freight transport in EU together with sea transport. As such, road transport constituted 75 per cent of the total transport in EU in 2001. The figure below illustrating the regional distribution of the road transport in tonnage shows that Ile-de-France with Paris as the biggest city clearly dominates the road transport in EU followed by Oberbayern with Munich. However, also the Øresund Region plays a role on the European road transport scene.

Air transport
The European air transport is much centred on a few regions that are all located in the centre of Europe as shown in the figure below.

Hessen with Frankfurt am Main as the largest city and airport is the leading region within air transport. The following are Nord-Holland with Amsterdam, London and Ile-d-France with Paris. Considerably after is the Øresund Region with Copenhagen Airport as the absolute leading airport on the cargo area.
Sea transport
Copenhagen-Malmö Port is the second largest port in Scandinavia with 14,157,000 tons. In the past years the Copenhagen-Malmö Port has invested heavily in facilities for handling import of cars, and the port is now the leading port for car distribution in the Scandinavian/Baltic region. The annual number of cars handled in the port has seen a sharp increase from 26,000 cars in 2001 to 245,000 car in 2005.
As shown in the figure below the Øresund Region in general is doing well compared to some of the European regions with the greatest competences within sea freight.
